Looking for an unforgettable Provence day trip during your stay at Chez Armand Gîtes? Just under an hour’s drive away, the Abbey of Sénanque (Abbaye Notre-Dame de Sénanque) offers a perfect blend of history, peacefulness, and the legendary lavender fields of the Luberon.
Whether you're a nature lover, a history enthusiast, or simply seeking the essence of Provence, this outing promises to be one of the highlights of your stay.

Getting to the Abbaye de Sénanque from Chez Armand Gîtes

The scenic drive from Chez Armand Gîtes to the Abbey of Sénanque near Gordes takes around 45–60 minutes. You'll pass through idyllic countryside—olive groves, vineyards, and charming hilltop villages—making the journey as delightful as the destination.
If you visit in late June through mid-July, the lavender fields are in full bloom, transforming the landscape into waves of purple and fragrance.

Don’t Miss the Guided Tour – It’s Superb

One of the best parts of visiting Sénanque is the guided tour, which we highly recommend booking in advance—especially during high season. Tours are available in English and French and last about an hour.
The guided experience was superb—informative, clear, and well-paced. The guide led us through the abbey’s peaceful cloisters, austere dormitories, and the beautiful Romanesque church. You’ll learn about Cistercian life, the architectural significance of the monastery, and the spiritual meaning behind its minimalist design.
Even if you're not religious, the atmosphere is serene and inspiring.

Practical Tips for Your Visit

  • Best time to go: Late June to mid-July for lavender bloom.
  • Tour bookings: Reserve online ahead of time via the official Sénanque Abbey website.
  • Arrival: Try to arrive early to avoid crowds and enjoy cooler temperatures.
  • What to bring: Comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, and a camera!
  • Souvenirs: Don’t miss the abbey shop—lavender oils, soaps, honey, and handcrafted items made by the monks are available.

Extend Your Trip: Stop in Gordes

Just 10 minutes from the abbey, Gordes is one of France’s most beautiful villages, perched dramatically on a hillside with cobbled streets and stunning views. A stroll through Gordes and a leisurely lunch at a local bistro make a perfect complement to your day.
